"They" say (who ever "they" are) have told us that Navy and black should not been worn together. This is just a fashion myth, because when it comes to fashion there are no hard and steady rules, but this topic seems to be one where people are most afraid to commit a fashion "don't", but most stylists agree that this colour combination is a great choice. It is a great way to add a little extra dimension to your outfit. Fashion girls have been rocking this look for as long as I can remember, and with each season, the outfits just get better and better.
Black and navy is super hot and trendy and it definitely looks good when done right. The darker hues complement each other nicely and serve as the perfect alternative to bright colours. Black is the new navy and navy is the new black. It's timeless and classy and is a great colour combination throughout the year.
Navy and Black are both highly versatile and typically work well with every other colour in your wardrobe, it’s also dark without being gothic, and sleek without being too stuffy, as the fashionistas say Navy and Black are both neutrals (and neutrals always mix...)
HOW TO WEAR BLACK AND NAVY TOGETHER:
1) Have at least one main piece that’s black and one main piece that’s navy. The fabrics, tones, and textures must complement each other. Don’t just throw on a navy accessory with a black dress. In order to mix the unmixable colours, it needs to look intentional, not done in error.
2) If you are uncomfortable with the pairing at first, try dark blue denim paired with a black top and shoes. Denim is almost universally considered a neutral, so it makes sense to pair it with black clothing items without looking like you're going for a high fashion take on the colour combo.
3) If you want to add in accent colours, keep them neutral – cream, white and grey are all great additions. Or play with adding stripes or a pattern!
4) Look for pieces that already mix navy and black in themselves; this helps to tie everything together more naturally. When combining these two for the chic effect, stick to navy and black only. Other colours can become distracting.
5) Make sure that the navy piece you're wearing is obviously navy, and not one of those "Is this navy?" or a black that's too light it looks charcoal/grey. You can create even more interest with these two colours by pairing each in interesting textures. As long as there is a distinct difference i think it looks classy.
